JUMP START- New Beginning    Making new relationships

Outta  my comfort zone

So you have all now experienced working with new classmates and learning new skills associated with Renegade Hockey. You have also been keeping a learning diary of those trainings and games.

Now I would like you to:

1. Choose one of those diary entries, edit it carefully and copy/paste it to this blog

2. Read entries of your classmates and respond to two classmates.

  1. Today I would give myself a 5/5 for effort and participation in this training because I worked well with my team and partner. Today I worked with Amy and we did recap on what we had been learning for the past couple lessons so we were able to get better form and hits. Our team was
team blue and although we didn't win we had a lot of fun and we worked well together. Something I really enjoyed was the aggressiveness and excitement that was happening during our game against team whero. Something that challenged me was getting involved during the game because the boys were really rough but in the end I had a lot of fun.

    3. The loss didn't affect you or your team which is very inspiring. The fun of it seemed to overall the end score which is awesome. Knowing that your team worked well together shows manaakitanga, great leadership, sportsmanship and team work. Great job :)

    4. Tino pai Ebony. I agree with all the statements you have stated. I really like how you have mentioned that you didn't win yous had a great amount of fun with teamwork. In conclusion it sounded like you had a great lesson:).

  2. Today I would give myself a 4/5 for effort and participation in this training because I worked hard to use and adapt to the game with my bruised knee and help my team score goals even if we didn't win. I also used the skills I learnt from Wednesday and utilised them in the activity/game.

A factor that influenced my participation was my teammates. Teammates/classmates always push me to be my best no matter the circumstances, they encourage and influence me to be who I am always meant to be. They also just make everything funnier while also having a sense of dignity too.

Something(s) I am doing to contribute to my team is/are trying my best while also learning and developing new skills/strategies to include in the game to make the game a lot more fun but also a little challenging too.

Something I really enjoyed was participating in the game. The game always seems to be the part I most enjoy because I get to create memories with my friends and just have a lot of fun while utilising skills I have learnt prior to the game. I enjoy the laughter and being around people that make me happy.

Something that challenged me was going all out. This is because I had a bruised knee and it stops me from being at my full potential, however I still managed to get through the game and score two goals by the end of it.

    2. Hey Mahuta, I really enjoyed reading your response. I love your high level of vocabulary and how you explained everything in detail. I like how you made connections with your peers and how you peer coached well with your partner. Why did you give yourself a 4 not a 5?

    3. WELL DONE MAHUTA!!! great that you really thought about what you were going to write about. A nice piece of work in my opinion and the way you thought about it!!!

  3. Today I would give myself a 5/5 for effort and participation in this training. I gave myself this score because I feel I worked very well with my team. We made a few tactics that showed to work very well. I think I gave a really good effort in this training and I participated and gave my all.
A factor that influenced my participation was my team, they were good at encouraging me and everyone else in the team, I feel very elated when I play renegade hockey and I believe I can keep enhancing my skills.
Something I did to contribute to my team was being a communicator, I went and got some information from whaea Ruth and shared it with my whole team making sure everyone got the instruction. Another thing I did to contribute to my team was participate, I didn’t let them down by not trying, or just letting the ball go straight past me.
Something I really enjoyed was playing with my team. I also enjoyed being encouraged by them, I also enjoyed encouraging other members of my team.
Something that challenged me was keeping an eye on both balls at once, I was constantly flooded with four different things, ball 1, ball 2, attack, and defend.

    1. Hey Amy, I really liked reading your responce on Renaged Hockey. I think you gave yourself a great and well deserved score with a good reason why to back it up. I like how you elaborated on what you had done and learnt during that P.E lesson and I hope to read more of your work.

  5. Today I would give myself a 4/5 for effort and participation in this training because; although I participated in all the peer coaches moments I purposely excluded myself from playing the game at the end of the lesson. Only because of my energy level or interest level or even because I was just being lazy but those are excuses. Next practical lesson my goal is to participate in the all round instructions, skills, game that is assigned to me and to push aside my so-called excuses that are irrelevant.
A factor that influenced my participation was; how energetic, involved, attentive etc, everyone was towards the lesson and to the sport. There energy influenced me to do it. There positive energy just fills the room which makes the lesson more bright, energetic and not just dead cause everyone of us were interested, we all participated which is to my view a good class.
Something(s) I am doing to contribute to my team is/are; comms. In a team communication is key. Once I subbed in to play my role I straight away opened my mouth. I've learnt this skill from previous sports i've played. And again communication is key when in a team.
Something I really enjoyed was; the lesson itself. No matter how unenergetic I was, the class itself and the people in it. They just overpowered that feeling and replaced it with theirs. Also the sport itself is very enjoyable.
Something that challenged me; was myself. The feeling to just not participate, to do everything throughout the lesson poorly. That was the challenge I had today was to overcome those feelings. I am proud that I got the chance to participate even though it was a short period of time, that was me fighting those feelings and it also shows that I am more than capable to do so.

  6. Today I would give myself a 4/5 for effort and participation in this training because I tried to the best of my ability in terms of trying to adapt to the game which I missed a fair bit of.
Today I peer coached with Hare.
He helped me learn quality skills and rules which helped me succeed in today's game.
I helped her/him learn to get low and sweep.
Skills I worked on improving was stopping the ball at a complete stop and trying to get a good smashing angle.
Something I really enjoyed was having a game with the class as it was a very positive and fun game.

  7. Today I would give myself a 5/5 for effort and participation in this training because I really tried putting all my focus and attention on learning the skills that Shakeal had set and explained. Being able to be partnered up with Shakeal was very good, giving him the right feedback that he needed, and him picking up the learning that was explained really fast, was even better. Also the focus he had, when learning was great!. So in the end I think I achieve my goal by communicating and improving on my skills by listening to the feedback that Shakeal had given me

Today I got partnered up with Shakeal. He helped me learn the skills, by giving me the task of controlling the scattle ball in different ways that were shown. Shakeal showed me the accuracy of moving the ball and how accurate the pass needs to be. Shakeal had also taught me how far I should be when passing a ball and where the distance of my footwork should be when passing the ball.
I helped Shakeal by giving easy demonstrations and instructions on how he could improve his skills. Like for instance showing how to position his hands on the hockey stick by using his left hand and placing it facing downwards while his right hand should be half way down the hockey stick on the black tape making sure he had a good posture, knees slightly bent. I also taught him how to trap the ball whether it's at a slow pace or fast pace. Helping him angle his hockey stick on where the ball shall go.
    Skill(s) I worked on improving was/were
My skills I had improved on was being able to communicate with my partner, giving him feedback. I also tried focusing and giving my full attention to my partner. Also having to learn so many different skills Shakeal had brought along our time in P.E, using all the skills Shakeal had taught me in a last minute game before packing up. So again I think I really improved a lot while working with Shakeal and being able to learn and improve on all the tactics and different techniques.
Something I really enjoyed was being able to be paired up with someone I wouldn’t normally be with and to also have the opportunity to work with someone that's the opposite gender. Personally I think I enjoyed learning from my partner (Shakeal) , getting to know what his set of mindset is whether it’s mentally or physically but also having him as my partner that will give me feedback on what I shall work on or having the communication on what both of us shall work on together as partners.

  9. Today I would give myself a 5/5 for effort and participation in this training because I was keen on doing something new and being with someone new as well. Although I was familiar with Tommy I still didn’t know what he was like or what he was capable of. I also gave myself a 5/5 because I was being a responsible peer and would help him with everything and vice versa. If they had an error in their learning then one or the other would correct them on their mistake and when we had games we would practice first then congratulate each other even if we fail or succeed.

Today I peer coached with Tommy
He helped me learn how to hit the ball and how my stance should be. He showed me how to block a high ball.
I helped him learn how to stop the ball from bouncing off of the hockey stick with a simple trick, and showed him what type of penalties and fouls there are.
Skill I worked on improving was/were cleaning up my movement and learning how to hit the ball without it stuttering or something like that.
Something I really enjoyed was being with my peers and working with them as well as playing with them. I liked when I flicked the ball up in the air and Tommy smashed it in the goal. It was very funny and cool at the same time which was great. I also enjoyed the way we coordinated with each other and the way we communicated with each other as well. I liked seeing everyone trying and laughing when they were versing each other.

  11. Today I would give myself a 5 for effort and participation in this training because I was able to help two people in this unit . I participated well and showed my skills a lot more effectively. I was able to score a goal today because of my amazing team. The downfall I would give myself though is not using my players a lot, as a player that has a team of 6 I should always use my 6 to win and score , not 1 individual running a one man show , It's all about teamwork and communication .

Today I helped Blaze and Josh discover they're playing style , whether it’s team skills or individual work. I found out Josh is a player were he likes to do things himself and show his skills a lot more when he has the ball but on the other hand Blaze is a player that uses his team to score and assist , he can set a lot of people up in goals and he shows his skill when he has to
Our team is starting to develop and grow as one, everybody was talking and pushing themselves because there was a lot more communication than usual , I also found out communication is only found in those whose confident and not whakama , but the confident ones should awhi the whakama ones so everyone is equal and confident.

Something I really enjoyed was others helping out the newbies because if no one stood up to help them they wouldn't be able to play and have fun with the others , so I enjoyed watching them learn.

Something that challenged me was myself, I say that because I don't usually try as hard in sports but when I see others challenging themselves that makes me push myself to push beyond them.

  12. Today I would give myself a 4/5 for effort and participation in this training because I was able to communicate with my peer coach and my team, whether it was showing them how to move with the ball or teaching them the rules, but in my opinion I still needed to get into a habit of getting myself more involved.

Today I peer coached with Junior.
He helped me learn how to dribble/control the ball. Whenever you dribble the ball, you want to stay a minimum of 3 steps away from the ball so your feet don't hit the ball . Junior also taught me how to steal the ball from the player on the opposite team. Whenever you’re looking to steal the ball, you want to stay away from the ball and hook the ball with your stick.
I helped her/him learn how to catch the ball depending on what side of your body it's going on, and depending on what speed it is going . For example, if it's coming slowly towards you then you run to the ball and start dribbling as soon as you can. And if it’s coming to you at a fast pace then you trap the ball and start dribbling.
Skill(s) I worked on improving was my stance for when I’m getting ready to catch or trap the ball. I was also trying to improve on stealing the ball from the opposition.
Something I really enjoyed was learning the basic rules of the game, and I enjoyed playing a normal game of Renegade Hockey.

  13. Today I would give myself a 5/5 for effort and participation in this training because ;
In my opinion I think I achieved my goal by participating and paying attention to my partner (Waiorere) . I think I gave her good feedback and she ended up excelling and taking my feedback and tweaking up her skills and improving fast. Another reason why I gave myself a high score is because I think my actions speak louder than words.

Today I peer coached with Waiorere. She helped me learn?
My partner was (Waiorere) she helped me by deminstated lots of easier was for me to be a better athlete/coach in the sport Renegade Hockey how she help me was by, teaching me how to hold the KOOKABURRA in different hand positions, like having my left hand placed on the stick facing downwards and my right hand at the end of the black tap. I also learnt how to trap the balls as it was coming towards me with pace, how she taught me. By getting me to angle my stick/kookaburra and make me practice it 3 to 4 times after she said my technique was good. I started to include the Scattle Ball and ended getting the hang of it.
    I helped her learn?
I helped (Waiorere) by controlling the Scattle Ball in different ways like get her to control and pass the Scattle ball to me slowly before I taught her with power, so she had as much control as she needed, so when we played a game she would have no trouble on worrying about having a poor technique. I also taught her how to strike the Scattle ball and how to make the ball go in the back of the net instead of it going everywhere, how I got her to practice shooting before I got in goal, I got her to practice close like 3 to 4 steps away from the goal, Eventually she progressed through the lesson and I ended up getting in the goal with the ball when she shot.
Skill(s) that me and my partner were improving were?

    Shakeal/Waiorere?
My skill that I was trying to enhance was to pay attention to my partner when she was teaching me new skills or different techniques or footwork/movement. How I accomplished my goal was participating, and having a positive attitude. Giving my full attention to my coach/partner, and I think I accomplished my goal because I got to learn lots of new skills and use them in the last game. I felt confident because I used the skills that I was taught and used them to get past my classmates.
    Something I really enjoyed was?
Having the privilege to work with someone that I would not normally peer coaching with, but having the opportunity to work with the opposite gender, and getting to know how their brain works mentally and physically. I nowdist and enjoyed the communication that was coming from me and her.

  14. Today I would give myself a 5/5 for effort and participation in this training because I was sweating most of the game and I was on both the defensive and offensive side.

A factor that influenced my participation was the competitive play because everyone that was playing was very into the game. It was enjoyable to play when everyone was trying their best and not just standing there.

Something(s) I am doing to contribute to my team. I was helping the goalies from the offence because they all started going all at once. For example it would be a 3 on 1 and I would run over and try and help the goalie out like getting the ball out.

Something I really enjoyed was being the offensive player and trying to get a goal.

Something that challenged me was the goalie position because sometimes people would come up with 2 balls and just rush me at the same time. It was hard to keep both of them away from the goal.

  15. Today I entered the game of this lesson and had a new peer coach so I gave myself a 5/5 for my effort and participation in this training.
Today I helped Poroto know that you can't use your body to block the ball unless you catch it, keep your feet distanced from the ball while you're tackling or dribbling, this enables the opponent's, or teammate's leg getting injured.
It was Pouroto who helped me. He helped me regain my memory of all the other skills I learned before this lesson
My team was called the Red Team.
Our team has started passing the ball more often, communicating with each other and forming a stronger team.
What I really enjoyed was the games we all had time to play.
The challenge for me was being a goalkeeper.

  16. Today I would give myself a 5 /5 for effort and participation in this training because…. I give myself a 5 because I helped pull out the goals and gear. I played almost a full game and was just giving as much effort as I could . I also pulled the rackets out with a ball.As soon as we finished setting up we warmed up without being told and quickly got into teams, helped and got involved in our cheers for the other team and started contributing to my team . I helped pack up afterwards quickly got changed and was tryna not be late .

A factor that influenced my participation was… seeing my mates and being someone who likes turning up and just getting straight into it. I think that's where I wanna just participate and I'm a very consistent person who is open to learning and I'm always seeing progression in myself which makes me wanna keep improving my skills while helping my peers craft their skills.

Something(s) I am doing to contribute to my team is/are… Leading by example, always helping and being open to sharing the skills that are needed to play the game that we are doing . I always put my hand up to be the communicator or captain just to get out of my comfort zone while showing my leadership skills.

Something I really enjoyed was… playing a new sport under pressure, always challenging myself and getting thrown into the deep end is what motivates me to be better and prove people wrong and I enjoyed that part.

  17. Today I would give myself a 4/5 for effort and participation in this training, My reasoning for having a ⅘ rating is because of my effort to help and let my two partners I had today train and warm up properly with each other and with me also, we had a very good very fun warm up dribbling and trying to steal the ball from each other and after all the warm ups. We made a decision to play a more advanced type of Renegade hockey but more advanced is always more fun. We played double balls and double scores which = double trouble.

Today I helped Josh and Noah

Someone who helped me learn and how was Josh and Noah he taught/told me you were not aloud to back up into people when you have possession of the ball
My team is called The ultimate reds
Our team is starting to be strategic and learn how to use the walls and work more as a team

Something I really enjoyed was having that extra adrenaline today with two balls running at the same time which meant I had to help out with my teams along with myself because I was keeping the goal safe as a goalie

Something that challenged Me was keeping an eye out for both balls because it was a whole lot of running looking and was crazy and so much chaos.

  20. Today I would give myself a 5 /5 for effort and participation in this training because I gave my full attention and effort to my peer partner and my team in organized chaos.

A factor that influenced my participation was fun/enjoyment because even though I’ve never played this sport and it is out of my comfort zone I had a lot of fun and enjoyment playing this sport and I really enjoyed peer coaching someone that isn’t in my form class.

Something(s) I am doing to contribute to my team is/are using them as much as I can so I can get everyone to contribute and be able to get a high achievement level and pass.

Something I really enjoyed was the whole unit because the new members that came in from other form classes were something very new to me but were really cool because they are actually very humble and nice people.

Something that challenged me was blocking the goals when I was marking two people with the ball and stealing the ball from the opposition team.

  21. Great - you completed today's tasks even though you were absent today Dayton. Thank you for contributing so positively to establishing the culture of this Jump Start Level 1 PE class. Starting with Renegade Hockey was deliberate as it was a new game to all - requiring the learning of unfamiliar skills and safety rules - hence everyone had to start as a newbie. Everyone had to step out of their comfort zone. For some it was in practising those new skills or peer coaching and the fact that you did so enthusiastically and enjoyed the unit speaks volumes about you. I look forward to your motivating influence over 2023 Dayton.

  22. Today I would give myself a 5/5 for effort and participation in this training because I tried my hardest and gave it my all and I also Improved skills such as trapping and goal keeping also helping my team by doing the cheers and helped pack away the gears.

Today I peer coached with Dayton again as I find he is an amazing leader but overall being fun to work and learn with
He helped me learn to improve my goalkeeping skills by telling me that I could use my whole body to defend the goal, he also brought over a couple others to hit the ball in the goal whilst I try to defend but also making sure that they were also improving by goal shooting
I helped him learn to shoot goals consistently but I can't really teach him much as he is an amazing skillful person but I still try my hardest to give him tips where and when I can
Skill I worked on improving was/were flicking the ball because I mainly play in as goalkeeper so it's important for me to be able to flick the ball over the goal and opponents to get it away from our goals
Something I really enjoyed was when Waiorere scored through my legs because it drove me to try harder which was really cool because I ended up blocking a whole bunch of goals after that.

  23. Today I would give myself a 5/5 for effort and participation in this training. I gave 100% of my effort and tried the best of my ability in doing so I achieved 3 goals which means I contributed to my team very well. As Well as contributing I showed a high level of communication and passed around with my peers to get them involved. I believed I used most of my skills that I learnt from the previous lesson and showed them with good confidence. Whaea introduced us to an idea where we would have roles designated to us, I was what I'd call a runner with the job of basically running around the court. I found this difficult as my teammates would forget these roles and either push up the court too much or stay in defense. This would in fact lead me to stay in one position or another, the way I solved this issue is i'd swap out our goalies and task them with the job that our team was lacking which did indeed help.

Today I helped Noah. We each focused on our passing ability so in the case of us closing in on our goal we can pass to one another which would guarantee our chances of scoring.
Someone who helped me learn and how was… Shakeal, he was my peer coach. He helped me learn the basics of renegade hockey. Today he taught me how to pass effectively to another teammate. We each faced each other at a distance and both of us passed to one another. He told me to trap and control the ball then go on to pass it. At first this was quite difficult for me because I would find that the ball keeped slipping under my hockey stick but slowly I got the hang of it and by the time we played a game I was very confident at trapping and controlling the ball, and passing it to my teammates. I believe passing is a crucial part of any sport so if you can do it confidently then it will give you an advantage.
My team is called Renegade Shankers
Our team is starting to pass confidently and we are slowly becoming better at defense, with the constant aggression from players like Shakeal and Dayton we can't lack in that area of skill but we also cant lack in our attack or we will not score many goals. But if we balance our players and skill levels I believe we will become a great and skillful team.

Something I really enjoyed was dribbling the ball up the court, I have found a awesome trick that throws any kind of player of and it secures me the ball, what I do is if another player has possession of the ball I would tap it in the air or in any other direction completely throwing them off and being able to take the ball and run past them. I have become very confident at the skill but I can't ignore my teammates so passing to them will always be an option giving them the chance to score or defend a possible attack.

Something I that challenged me was becoming a goalie, I struggled at this because I found that if one or more players would attack me and I would rush the ball, this left the goal open and giving the opposition a chance to score, the way I solved this problem is I would call for defenders or possible attackers to fall back and give me some help this would insure that we would take possession of the ball and hit it up the court and possibly scoring a goal. Another issue I found is when more than one ball is on the court it leaves many players clueless on what is happening with the other one such as in many cases I would need to call for help because my teammates would not know that our goal was being attacked.

Overall I really enjoyed communicating to my peers whether we were attacking a goal or defending one, communication is vital within a team based game and is what dictates how players work together, it can strengthen bonds between players and can Improve with how we react to negative or positive effects that happen within a sport.

  24. Today I would give myself a 4 /5 for effort and participation in this training because
I have pushed myself out of my comfort zone like for example not being goalie for the entire game and went for a run chasing the ball around to help my team out as I possibly can.And learning to be more social with my 1HPE class.but over and above I really enjoyed the running while playing the game it made me felt like I was not tired that I feel that I could keep running. But I really enjoyed the lesson with all the laughing and the intense game.

A factor that influenced my participation was...fun/enjoyment because even though being in a different class with new people that I don’t usually have in my last HPE classes it was not in my comfort zone and me not knowing how to play Renegade hockey was really different but an interesting sport to play. But overall I really enjoyed peer coaching with someone that I have not met and not in the same form class as me.And It was a lot of fun getting to know my new classmates.

Something(s) I am doing to contribute to my team is/are...being there for my team as much I can be. I work harder or help my team as much as I can than my team can work less so all they can worry about is them self and getting the ball off the other team.

Something I really enjoyed was…stealing and blocking the ball from the other team.

Something that challenged me was…dribbling the ball across the otherside of the court without getting the ball taken off me.
