My Active Lifestyle - Athletics Entry

Tena koutou e nga akonga pukmahi

You have worked hard in the Athletics module, researching, planning and using a variety of learning/training strategies to improve your performance  in your pentathlon events. Consequently, we saw a high level of participation in the Bay of Islands College Athletics Day, with many even achieving personal bests (PBs) and placing in events. Miharo!

Having completed your first entry in your My Active Lifestyle portfolio, we now want you to complete the following tasks:

1. Choose one paragraph explaining one factor that influenced your effort and participation from your portfolio entry. Ensure you have corrected and edited all spelling, punctuation and vocabulary errors. The copy/paste it under this post.

2. Over the next week choose two posts of your peers to respond to. Always remember that the purpose of your response is to motivate improvement in thinking, writing and participation so ensure it is  Positive  Supportive   Helpful.

  1. Today I would give myself an Achieved Merit Excellence (highlight one) for effort and participation in this lesson.
Highlight and EXPLAIN one factor that influenced your participation.
Well-being Challenge Fun/enjoyment Sense of achievement Social factors
Pushes body to physical and/or mental limit Can go at own pace Improving skills
EXPLAIN how/why: This factor influenced me to participate in p.e because it challenged me to try and read where they were going to throw the frisbee and I was challenged to play harder since they had more people on their team and Chayse, so we had to strategize on how we could out play them.
Today I learnt with Pouroto and Quin.
They helped me learn how to find a way to have an opening so they can pass it to me.
I helped them learn where to throw the frisbee if they were being guarded.
Skill(s) I worked on improving were trying to throw the frisbee so it would look like it was sliding in the air.
Something I really enjoyed was having a game with our opposition trying to figure out how to beat

  2. Fun and Enjoyment plays a big part in my personality and personal life. I'm always willing to have a laugh and a joke around at the appropriate time with my peers and it always makes my day better. With athletics for some events I was able just to enjoy myself and just participate to make sure I had enough strength and power to push my body for the events I was getting marked on. I liked being able to take my time with some events but still making sure to do as many as I could to guarantee some points for Totara house. The excitement and adrenaline from the crowds watching really had me pumped and excited to be there particularly in the relay when everyone was screaming and cheering as each house pushed for 1st place where our girls were able to get the win.

    1. Hi Ebony, I loved how you related fun and enjoyment to your personality, I think its great that you were enjoying yourself doing athletics and getting points for Totara house at athletics day. I personally really enjoy working with you because I feel you definitely bring that fun and enjoyment into everything you do.

    2. Congrats on your house and relay winning first!! I like how you explained about the things you enjoy and how this factor influences your level of participation. I feel like you definitely have a bit to much fun but nothing is wrong with that. Good job!!

I highlighted social factors because not only has being in a classroom full of diverse and differently skilled peers I can learn, even from the first practical lesson on an Ultimate Frisbee field that people have different specialties in the sport, therefore requiring me to see where certain people can go and thrive at as well as sticking to the rules.

  5. The factors that have influenced my participation are my mindset, accessibility and fun/enjoyment.

My mindset influenced me to perform to the best of my ability and allowed me to push through any limitations and negative thoughts. For example, when I was running the 100m I felt like giving up as I wasn't getting as good of a result as others. However, by keeping a positive mindset I was able to stick it through and complete the sprint. This taught me that I'm in control of my mind and it is not in control of me.

Accessibility influenced me in my participation on athletics day because I was familiar with the setting and events therefore I was not as nervous on the day. For example, having access to the athletics gear and layout during training sessions leading up to the day allowed me plenty of time to practice. This taught me that having accessibility to these, it's important to practice properly and use time wisely.

Fun/enjoyment influenced me by making me more excited and interested in participating. I was hooked on a lot of events due to the enjoyment and happiness I received. For example, when I threw the javelin I could feel the power of it exit my hand as I threw, I could see the faces of my peers giving support as I grin of proudness and joy. We learnt that fun/enjoyment played a major role in my participation and in bettering my skills and attributes by being in a fun, enjoyable and supportive environment.

The factors have influenced me in a positive way because they have driven me to perform at the best of my ability. To become somewhat successful as a self motivated character were self bettering attributes to become exceptionally better physically and mentally. Well being and sense of achievement played a major role in improving my participation level as I have a high demand in keeping a healthy and fit body. For me to gain more knowledge and skills is a great step into having a sense of achievement in the process of bettering myself yet achieving educationally and physically.

I could've met better standards in terms of getting my act together from the start. Towards the start of jumpstart level 1 I found myself unaware of completing reflections which were well overdue. These standards included having a reflection on my athletics session and planning done before the next session. Over the course of approximately 13 weeks I developed a great work ethic towards finishing my reflections. I created good reflections after receiving numerous amounts of growlings, and wholly amount of lunchtime detentions I completed a lot of reflections due on time. These are also evident on my athletics assess. I learnt that hard work beats talent when talent fails to work hard.

    1. I am glad you are starting to realise the impact reflecting (thinking about) can have on your quality of learning Quin. Reflecting/thinking during the physical activity to adjust and improve as you are active.
Reflecting/thinking after the lesson about how/why you improved (or didn't) Thinking about how you could maximise your improvement in the next training lesson -watch a skills video OR consult an expert OR work with a knowledgeable peer?
Then planning (forward thinking) to apply your new understandings/decisions in the next lesson. As such, you will be utilising and strengthening all dimensions of your Hauora to become even more self determining
For some, Physical Education lessons should be all about moving (taha tinana) only and the kaiako should do all the thinking. The kaiako should be the controller, the only expert capable of giving feedback and feed forward. So outdated and unuseful for you on your haerenga to adulthood.
I urge you to keep up the great work you have started - even deepen your understanding of how and why you can maximise your own potential, your own 'superpowers' Quin. Kia kaha. Kia toa. Kia manawanui!

  8. I tend to always enjoy things with a little bit of spice, something to help me get through the day, something that keeps me entertained and that thing always seems to be fun. The entertainment and pleasure I get by getting to do things that aren't always so serious and pressuring is always a good thing. I’ve never seemed to take anything serious because it makes me anxious and bored, that's why the entertainment part and excitement I get helped me so much In this unit of athletics. It lets out someone who enjoys school life and has fun with anything I do. Having fun is the top of my list when it comes to factors that influenced my level of participation, fun is what it's all about. That's why I enjoyed the little laughs we had while trying to learn a new technique. “It is always fun to learn something you wanna get better at or are already good at.”

    1. Hey Mahuta, I think the exact same. I feel as if something will always be serious and boring if you never have something or even someone to push you through that boredom. Great insight, as always!!

  9. I highlighted the challenge factor because I feel that when i'm challenged to do something it pushes me to do better, I think that by watching everyone else get personal bests it challenged me to do also. In this unit I was not only challenged to push myself, but I was challenged to get out of my comfort zone socially, working with others at different events really boosted my confidence. Receiving and giving feedback on others techniques was also a challenge for me because I had to really focus on what they were doing wrong and right. I think being challenged is an everyday thing for me, not knowing my potential in things, such as sports excites me to find out. Looking at my life I can see how being challenged can impact my view on things, it has the power to motivate me and try new things.

    1. Kia ora Amy, I like how you challenged yourself and pushed yourself to get PBS and how you were willing to get outside of your comfort zone to work with others at other events. Your social skills are improving quite quickly and I am happy to see you out there socialising with other peers in our PE class. Is there anyone in particular you haven't worked with that you want to work with?

      Delete
    2. Yes, comfort zones are 'safe'. Safe from embarrassment, safe from rejection. Safe from the dreaded 'failure'. However, new learning only occurs outside of that zone. Outside of the comfort zone is where all the exciting possibilities exist. I saw your many smiles of pleasure when you overcame a challenge and experienced the joy of learning with others and alone. Thank you for sharing your personal journey here Amy and I look forward to seeing your comfort zone expanding even more.

    3. This is a really great response for your chosen factor. I agree when you mentioned doing something that is very challenging pushes you to do better because I think the same, I think that doing something out of your comfort zone or something you find challenging pushes you and motivates you to do even better so I think this is a really great response.

    4. Kia ora Amy!, I really enjoyed reading your paragraph. It was explained very well and I liked how you were able to push yourself and challenge yourself to get PBS and how you were able to relate it to your personal journeys in life. Hearing you had the confidence in stepping out of your comfort zone is a well accomplished goal. Keep up the work Amy!!

  10. The factor I have highlighted is pushing myself, both physically and mentally to do the best of my ability. I really pushed myself to go beyond the limits I never knew I had in me. Although I was suffering with an injury to my calf muscle, I still managed to put in the effort and cope as best as I could, giving 100% in anything and everything, willing to push myself to my full potential and having a strong/focused mindset to go to the very end and not give up.

    1. Kia ora Waiorere, I love how you're always out there pushing yourself no matter what. You're someone who up lifts and pushes other to do better and participate. You have a great mind set and you always focus on your goals to achieve them with a high level of performance even when you have an injury. Is there any event in particular you think you could've done better?

    2. Nice Waio! I like how you always give 100% to everything you do it shows you have a growth mindset and always push yourself to do your very best. Even if you were injured you always seem to find loop holes to train and it inspires me and probably many others. Did you push yourself in every athletic event?

  11. The highlighted factor I have chosen to publish is challenge. I found many challenging events, especially the running events because there are faster boys than me in my year or just below, but that didn't stop me from giving my absolute best in my sprints.
Not only did I challenge myself in this athletics unit I challenged all the people around me, what I mean by this is going up against the faster boys to improve a lot better on myself instead of other students below my level which will improve their skill level but lack my improvements, I believe challenges makes yourself see improvement a lot better than going the “easy way”.

    1. Kia ora Noah, I am always highly influenced in the way you challenge yourself to improve your skills. You have a mindset that is cable in surpassing average standards. Your mindset is key to improving with skills as it gives you strong abilities in never giving up or never choosing the ''easy way''. Did you have any other events which you were outstanding at?

    2. Hi Noah, I was intrigued while reading your paragraph because you gave clear detail into why you wanted to improve. You told us that even though you are not the best at something you can still improve and become a lot better. This was very inspiring, Great work!

  12. The highlight factor I have chosen is Fun/Enjoyment.What influenced me the most was Fun/Enjoyment.Why,well because I was motivated and purposely wanting to push and improve myself in my Athletics Training and my performances on Athletics Day.I really enjoyed myself when doing my training and this day I felt really great for Example I was training and practicing my technique and learning at the same time for Discus. It was the spin technique where you use your whole body and spin yourself in a 360 degrees rotating with the grip technique of the Discus to give the Discus more power and movement. And After that training I was like “lets see if I improve my technique in Shot Put” So I grab the shot Put that I used for on Athletics Day And I did My technique The Glide and my gripping technique and PUSH the shot and broke my PB(Personal Best) in Shot Put my last PB was 9.88m but this time I got 10.50m I was so close at breaking the School record for Intermediate Girls Shot Put.But in that moment I was really proud of myself

    1. Hi Rayelle, I really enjoyed reading your paragraph, I think the way you explained your discus and shot put throws was very easy to visualise and its so good that you got a new PB in shot put. I think the effort you put into your training was defiantly reflected in this paragraph and Its really good to hear that your enjoying yourself while pushing yourself.

  13. I found many things in the Athletic Asses challenging. If I was either learning a new technique or getting past something I was struggling with the sense of achievement after I accomplished something made me feel like I was improving. This feeling encouraged me to participate at the level I did and with such effort, because I was determined to not only improve but to become better than I was once before.

    Social Factors
For me the social aspect of improving or with another partner influenced my level of participation a lot, it was very helpful having someone there for advice as you can’t see yourself attempting something like the runup for javelin or the high jump technique. As a lot of it was feeling for me it proved useful partnering with someone or multiple people as I have done before. I did drills with partners which helped me get the feeling of a certain technique such as the standing throw and how the javelin needed to land into the ground. Training Entry #8 I did a drill to practice this and I noticed that my hips moved much easier and I needed to follow it through with my elbow almost like a whip. After I tried it I got much further distance now I need to practice this. I feel that this is what was wrong with my technique and once I perfect this I will get much better results.

    Improving skills
I enjoyed improving my techniques for various events such as the high jump or javelin. For example when learning the runup for javelin once I attempted it the first time I scored something close to 20m this was decent but I kept trying and on the 4th attempt I was at 27.5m, this would've been a pb however a teacher was not there to verify. But this told me that the more I practiced and perfected a certain skill i would eventually get better and make progress.

    Challenge
I found many events challenging for athletics, especially the sprints and some throwing events. I am not much of a sprinter and I haven't ever tried javelin at the level I have like this year so I found it difficult when I couldn't get a certain technique down. Sometimes I would become frustrated that I wouldn't get a certain result. But this was a learning curve for me, to not focus on results and doing the best I had to learn to focus on certain aspects of an event so that if perfected my results would improve.

    1. Although I only asked for one paragraph, explaining one factor, I'm glad you posted your whole portfolio entry on Athletics, Cody.
This is a great example to classmates of how to write a well structured, thoughtful, detailed and personalised response to meet the part of this standard "and explain factors that influence own participation". Your spelling and punctuation was accurate too. Thanks for editing and using vocabulary which made it so interesting to read.
Well done and maintain the high active participation and great reflections for all our modules to nail an excellence in this standard.

  14. the factor that I've chosen is sense of achievement I feel that I have achieved a lot during these few weeks of participating in PE and on Athletics Day. I have an acceptable PB (Personal Best) for many of my chosen events. During PE I practised the technique of each event. For example, for throwing I started off from where your hand is meant to be placed, how it is held, when it is thrown and how it is thrown with full force using the rotation of your hips and finally following through making sure your accuracy is on point. During Athletics Day I Achieved a lot as I broke my PB for 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, and High jump, knowing that I can be proud of saying that I have Achieved and also exceeded my goals I set on most of my events

  15. Social Factors

Junior was the one people that helped me the most with a few techniques for throwing the javelin.
Training Entry #2: Junior was able to help with some tips with throwing the javelin by standing in one place. He helped me to make sure I kept my arm and the javelin straight before my throws. Cody and Junior helped me with some techniques for the high jump, they helped me with where I should be placing my feet for when I’m running to the pole, which foot I should be jumping off, and how I should my body while I’m in the air. It was very helpful because if I failed or did something wrong, they would show me the technique again and it made it much easier. Dayton was able to give me some little tips on where and how I should be placing my fingers when holding the discus and showed me when to release which was really helpful and made it a little bit easier.

I witnessed the coaching you received from your peers AND how willingly you used their tips to practice more accurately. It is this growth mindset that makes you enjoyable to work with. Haere tonu!

  17. For my first factor I chose: Pushes body to physical and/or mental limit because during this unit I would go to class with a few injuries and doing all my events really did put a toll on my body. This was the same for Athletics Day. I played a league game the day before and that really put a lot of pain on my body and it decreased my level of skill in the events but that didn’t stop me. I still gave 100% in the events I did yesterday because I really wanted to get a higher score than my practice score or atleast pass this unit with excellence.

The second factor I chose was:Social Factors (able to do with friends; choose your own group). Even though I usually worked by myself there were still times where my pairs really motivated me, this really increased my level of participation and effort because it gave the unit a bit of fun and enjoyment. For example in Javelin Quin really motivated me to get the technique on lock and to speed up my takeoff speed. He also improved my technique on the throw in javelin.

For my final factor I chose:Planning my training and training my plan. Whaea Ruth gave us a few videos to watch and the videos were about doing the technique to every event step by step so I already knew what I had to work on. As we reflected on our day's performance we had to plan what we were doing for the next day and I really thought about my planning and what I really needed to work on. So the next day I would go to P.E ready and prepared for what I needed to do.

  18. The highlighted factor that i have choose is pushing myself. Pushing my body is an understatement of how far I am willing to push myself which is beyond the limits that my body is capable of .I really wanted all my events to sky rocket through the roof and meet the expectations that were given for at the end of our semester . I really believed in however hard you train is how good you preform on game day , that is why i trained at 100% every time we went out and preformed these events . I really liked pushing each other and being all in a good learning mindset witch will increase the higher chances of being good results and being someone who doesn't like working with the opposite gender and peer coaching really got me to push through and get out of my comfort zone really help with social skills. I believe that how ever hard you are working someone is work 2x as hard .

  20. Sense of Achievement before learning all the techniques was hard because I was basically a headless chicken and didn’t know what I was doing. But then I learned the techniques and I started getting better progressively. Before I learnt the technique I was averaging 20m in discus then after learning the technique I started to average at least 25m and got my new PB 30m. This made me feel better about myself because I knew I could do better. This is the reason why it influenced me to participate more because I could see my growth during the process.

  24. What motivated me today was my wanting to do better in this event, the coaching from Whaea Ruth and my peers supporting me. I appreciated whaea ruth today in how she showed me to look straight ahead when releasing the Javelin. Instruction; good listening skills and trying again with a good outcome gave me great satisfaction in my work achievements today.

what motivated me was my sheer determination to give it a go and prove to myself that I can do this! Once again it is my peers, teachers and support people I have around me that influence me through their words of support.

How I intend to train after doing some research: I like the discus. It is cool for me because I got 23M long but it was a good throw. but on wednesday I am training 200M on wednesday but I have to try my best on training but I have to do discus to buy Sophia she helps me to do it. and I want to do a high jump too but if I want to do a high jump I have to try my best to do a high jump. and I am so happy for the training but I got help from Sophia Harper if you do not have a lesson you have to do it. and I want to do 400M on wednesday but if i do the 400M I have to do my best that 400M

  25. During the athletics training, all of the factors that I highlighted were displayed multiple times during P.E. Whether it was with peers, challenging others at an event, training or being trained and or just having fun in general. All of these factors were what made me continue beating my record and others too. I liked training others and showing them how to do a technique properly so that way you don’t hurt yourself or stop yourself from doing better. Training Entry #3: When we were doing javelin, I was teaching/showing Cody, Quilah and Tommy how to throw the javelin properly so the metal tip lands in the ground and not the tail. I also let them show me my mistakes and errors and let me correct mine as well. During that training day, the fact that all of them asked me to show them the technique from throwing it to doing the run up really made me happy because I didn’t mind helping them out and showing them that they can throw further than before. Some Y10’s came up to me and asked if I could show them how to throw it too.

Most of my training sessions included; training others or being trained, training with others trying to get a pb, practicing my technique in a shady place away from others or even doing my reflection because I forgot to do it, but even though some of the things I stated were not proper ways of showing the factors that I chose, I can make them affect or influence my participation or effort making me finish whatever i’m doing. If I was training at a running event, I would challenge myself to beat my current record, and if it does end up happening, that boost of confidence can be used in every other event.

Athletics day; These factors influence my participation in Athletics Day, because all of them related to me, making it increase my effort of participation, but to do it with people or friends make it much better, but that’s if they have the same type of energy that is influencing my participation.
I like everything to be a challenge that forces me to use more energy and increase my capabilities of learning to an extent making me achieve victory against the challenge that was put up to me, and while i’m faced with a challenge I can make it enjoyable or fun so that way I won’t want to quit halfway to overcoming it. Just like in Athletics Day, I challenged myself to perform each event instead of just participating in it. All of the factors that I highlighted made me do better in each event because there were friends doing it with me, we made it fun and enjoyable and we challenged each other to see who would win.

  26. Athletics.
I felt like I achieved a sense of achievement because of the time frame I took to train in each event. I knew I made lots of progress towards the end because of how my scores were increasing with each throw, run or jump. Much improvement was made by the end of our topic. While training it really challenged both my mental and physical state.

The running events really focused on my physical ability to push myself to limits beyond my comfort zone. Running the 100m was a challenge because I often run long distance rather than short so it was a different pace than what I'm used to. The running blocks I trained in during the holidays focused on long distance and agility not speed.
So I pushed my body to a different physical limit. For me, when my physical state is being tested it always connects to me mentally as well. And that was a real challenge.

Having that sense of giving up I tend to overcome that whilst training or competing with my peers. On athletics day my sense of achievement and participation was my top priority.
How I challenged myself was whenever there was a running event I would say to myself I'm just gonna participate and not run as a competitive. But somewhere in my mindset said you are capable of competing in the competitive group. So I did so.

  27. I feel like I influenced my own motivation and/or level of participation and effort today. I had no partner today but even then my one and only goal was to set PB’s before Athletics tomorrow. I set two PB’s and went over the relay to sort out who is running, how to run etc. It was an energetic self training today regardless of who was with me, which is what I loved. It shows that you don’t need anybody else to make you happy about sport training.

Instead of trying to focus and have all my attention to one event I should have been more proactive and taken a glance at other events, so maybe I would make it into the qualifiers instead of earning participation points. Definitely noted for the next Athletics to come.
